After I began practicing yoga regularly, I realized it was not just the asana (postures) that was making me feel so much better - it was also the moments of meditation weaved into it.

I long had a misconception about meditation. I thought it was sitting quietly without thoughts ("zoning out"). I tried a few times many years ago but abandoned it after thinking I wasn't capable.

I've since learned that is NOT what meditation is.

There are many different methods to reach a meditative state and I think it's a little different for everyone. For me, the end result is a subtle, refreshed sensation.

What's working for me now is -

LYING DOWN on my yoga mat so my spine is in alignment

ACCEPTING that I will experience distractions (thoughts, sounds - process it!)

LISTENING to a guided meditation - there are so many to choose from - or -

MANTRA meditation

BREATHING (pranayama)
