OM (or AUM) is described as the primordial or original sound of the universe. It represents the past, present, and future in its completeness - the universe - joined into a single sound.

Om is the vibration that connects us with the universe and heightens our sense of awareness, peace, and community. One can understand why it is sometimes incorporated at the beginning or at the conclusion of a yoga class.

When I began my yoga practice, I did feel awkward during OM and sometimes I would just listen and feel (still do). I've always noticed the silent pause at the conclusion of the chant brings a feeling of calmness, healing or renewed energy.

There is much history and science behind OM chanting. As I encounter more information, not only am I intrigued but I also appreciate it more when I am invited to join in.
